Google Requiring Extra Configuration to Use Gmail with Non-Google Apps

Actions to Take

Bring this Support Notice to the attention of your Information Technology department.

Issue

Google will newly require additional authentication when using a Gmail account on third-party applications. This change takes effect May 30, 2022.

Essent Service Impact Analysis

Essent customers using Gmail as their mail system for Essent products, including the EssentOne business management system, will need to define and use an app password instead of using their traditional email password. The Gmail account will also need Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

Corrective Action

Customers who use Gmail as their mail system for Essent products need to take two actions.

  1. Ensure that the Gmail account uses Two-Factor Authentication or, otherwise, set up 2FA. Google provides instructions for setting up 2FA here.
  2. Create and use a app password. An app password is a 16-digit passcode that gives a non-Google app or device permission to access your Google Account. Google provides instructions for creating and using app passwords here.
  3. Securely communicate your app password to Essent Support by calling Essent Support at 1-800-559-9959. Passwords should never be communicated by email.

Essent Support is available to assist customers who need help with the actions.

More information

As of May 30, 2022, according to a Google post, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. The app password will be required.
