Essent Donation Dips into Innovative Community Pool Project

Essent has made a KickStarter donation to PlayLab to create a + POOL, what's envisioned as the world's first water-filtering floating pool. The creation of the pool would mark the first time in 100 years that people could swim in clean New York river water.

Here's how it works: The plus-shaped pool floats in the river, and its walls filter the water that flows into it from the river, creating swimmable water that meets city and state environmental standards.

The 9,000-square-foot pool -- besides providing a a cool place to cool down -- will clean half a million gallons of river water each day and is meant to provide a template on how to clean dirty rivers, one piece at a time. The makers this year are creating a prototype to test the technology, and hope to have the pool open in 2016.

"Essent is passionate about creating technology that positively impacts lives," Essent President and CEO Eric Alessi said of the donation to PlayLab. "The + POOL project is an awesome example of creating technology to bring positive change. Essent is so excited we became a sponsor of the project. Here’s to innovative technology and the people that leverage it to better the world."
